Can You Seriously Study Piano Online

After more than 10 years of teaching online, I have long been convinced that this format can be serious, deep, and genuinely effective.

With every passing year, students understand this more clearly too. The old stereotype that nothing real can be learned online, or that such lessons are only a temporary substitute, has almost disappeared.

More and more people see in practice that, with the right approach, online study truly works.

I am, of course, very much in favour of real human contact and in-person lessons. Live interaction has its own energy, atmosphere, and important advantages. But why not also use the remarkable possibilities that modern technology gives us?

When I was a student myself, I could not even dream of such a format. To gain the knowledge I needed, I had to travel very far. And I mean that literally: I went all the way to Mexico to take masterclasses with the outstanding contemporary pianist, teacher, conductor, and composer Anatoly Zatin.

Today everything is different. Now I can share knowledge almost instantly through modern online technologies. And this creates tremendous possibilities both for the teacher and for the student.

Why Online Lessons Work

The main factor is not the format itself, but the quality of the work. If a lesson is built seriously, if there is a clear system, attention to detail, specific tasks, and regularity, online teaching can be a very powerful tool.

In such lessons, it is entirely possible to work on:

— technique
— freedom of the playing apparatus
— sound quality
— rhythm and coordination
— sight-reading
— musical thinking
— interpretation
— preparation for competitions, concerts, and entrance exams

In some respects, online lessons even offer additional advantages.

The Advantages of the Online Format

During an online lesson, I can ask a student to show the hands from different angles, move the camera closer, separately show the wrist, fingers, posture, and body movement. This makes it possible to analyse details very precisely — details that are not always so easy to isolate even in a normal in-person lesson.

In addition, students can make recordings, rewatch my explanations, send videos between lessons, and I can follow their progress more accurately.

There is also another important point: during an online lesson there are often fewer outside distractions. Attention is more strongly focused on sound, movement, the musical text, the task itself, and the process of work. Because of this, a lesson can become very concentrated and productive.

Online Is Not a “Reduced” Format

Even now, one can still hear the opinion that an online lesson is somehow secondary compared to a “real” one. In my experience, this has long ceased to be true.

If the student is serious, if they are ready to work regularly and attentively, online lessons make it possible to go very far and to do so at a high level. What matters is not the distance between teacher and student, but the quality of teaching, the level of engagement, and the seriousness of the work itself.

That is why I have long stopped seeing online teaching as a temporary compromise. I see it as a полноценный, modern format for serious musical education.

In-Person and Online Lessons Do Not Contradict Each Other

I still value in-person lessons very highly. But I see no reason to oppose one format to the other. Today, both in-person work and online teaching can be used, depending on the student’s situation, goals, and possibilities.

Sometimes online study becomes the best solution simply because it allows you to work with the right teacher, even if you live in another city or another country. And that is one of the great advantages of our time.

There was a time when one had to travel across the world in search of the right knowledge. Today, serious professional training can be received directly, regularly, and without delay.

And that is truly one of the best opportunities the modern era has given us.
