Johann Sebastian Bach’s Prelude No. 1 in C Major from The Well-Tempered Clavier (Book I, BWV 846) is one of the most famous and beloved keyboard works ever written.
Clear in structure, rich in harmony, and timeless in expression, this prelude has become a cornerstone of piano education and concert repertoire alike.
This page presents my professional piano edition of the Prelude in C Major, carefully prepared for pianists who want not only to play the notes, but to understand the music and shape it meaningfully.
In this edition, I focused on clarity, musical logic, and practical performance details:
clean and readable engraving
thoughtful articulation and phrasing
dynamic suggestions that support musical flow
additional performance remarks based on historical and stylistic context
The score is designed to be accessible while still offering depth for more advanced pianists.
As you can hear in the video, I occasionally play the repeated notes in each bar in different octaves.
There is nothing technically complicated about this approach. I do not claim that it is better or worse than the traditional version — I simply find that it sounds very elegant and musical, and that such an interpretation has every right to exist.
This kind of octave displacement is historically justified as well. It reflects how this music could have been performed on different manuals of the organ or harpsichord, where changes of register naturally enriched the texture.
This Prelude is played by almost everyone — especially by beginner pianists. It is loved because it can be learned relatively quickly, yet it allows one to develop many essential skills: tone control, balance, harmonic awareness, and musical breathing — provided it is practiced thoughtfully.
More detailed performance suggestions and interpretive remarks can be found in my edition on the third page, immediately after the score.
