Johann Sebastian Bach — Prelude in C minor, BWV 847

<< Return to the sheets List

Johann Sebastian Bach’s Prelude in C minor (BWV 847) from The Well-Tempered Clavier, Book I is a masterpiece of polyphonic thinking disguised as a continuous stream of sixteenth notes.

This page offers my author’s piano edition of the Prelude — the exact text behind my own interpretation and teaching approach.

What makes this edition different

The main interpretive idea is simple:
while gently sustaining the hidden melodic tones, you must keep full awareness of the “buzzing” sixteenth-note motion underneath.

If you choose to slightly hold certain upper tones (and a few bass tones) longer, there is no need to accent them. Instead, let the hands sink into the keyboard naturally and listen deeply. The melody should bloom from within the texture, not be “pushed” out by harsh articulation.

What you get

• High-quality printable PDF score
• Clean engraving and practical spacing for study and performance
• My editorial concept aimed at natural voicing and deeper listening
• A performance-oriented layout (made for the piano, not just for reading)

Who this is for

• Piano students and adult amateurs who want a musical, clear approach to Bach
• Teachers looking for a practical edition to discuss voicing and polyphonic hearing
• Pianists who already know the notes and want a deeper, more natural solution for the hidden melody

Notes

This is an interpretive author’s edition. It does not aim to “replace” an urtext; it offers a coherent performance concept that can be used in practice and teaching.

If you have any questions about the edition, feel free to contact me through the website.
